Abstract

The historical relationship that the members of the Agricultural Community of Huentelauquén have had with the population of the Pachurrón or Chorlo de Campo (Oreopholus ruficollis), which annually arrives at the Ramsar Site Las Salinas de Huentelauquén (Comuna de Canela, Chile) was investigated. The traditional knowledge associated with the species was documented through individual and group interviews with older adults, together with the pressures that affected it during the 20th century at the local level. Historically, this bird has allowed peasants to interpret phenomena of nature, such as the arrival of rains, and has been part of the construction of cultural ties between people and birds. However, there are little known aspects about its natural history. Additionally, the interviewees pointed out that indiscriminate hunting, together with the deterioration of their habitat, have caused the decline of the large migratory flocks that once arrived at the semi-arid coast of Huentelauquén.
