Abstract

The ozone layer constitutes a natural protection barrier against UV-B radiation, but this has been considerably reduced by emissions of chlorofluorocarbon gases. To prevent damage to the skin by UV- B, there are sun blockers that contain chemicals harmful to health. Due to the existence of organisms able to synthesize natural photoprotectors, we compared the photoprotective capacity of extracts of red algae from an environment with high UV radiation (Pyropia sp.), an Antarctic genus, and environments with less exposure (Chondracanthus chamissoi). The methodology described by Karsten et al. (1998) to extract their mycosporins (MAAs) at different concentrations (10, 20 and 30 mg g-1 DW) and the UV absorbance of each extract was measured. Extracts from Pyropia sp. Of 20 and 30 mg showed greater photoprotective activity, with an absorption of 100%, which were used in the production of lipsticks.
