Abstract

Antibiotics are medicines used to prevent and treat bacterial infections. However, the bacteria have become resistant, and as a consequence many antibiotics do not currently allow to treat diseases that are affecting humanity. Although resistance to antibiotics is a natural phenomenon, the undue use is accelerating resistance throughout the world. New mechanisms of bacterial resistance appear and spread evidencing the urgent need to look for new compounds with antibacterial activity. This work shows extremophile organisms present in the Antarctic Territory of Chile of international scientific interest because they can be new sources of antimicrobial substances. The specific purpose of this work was to inhibit Salmonella. The secretion produced by the Antarctic bacterium M52-112-1 that shows antagonistic activity on Salmonella typhi and Salmonella enteritidis was studied. From the study it is concluded that the secreted corresponds to a Gram-negative bacillus that presents antibacterial activity on Salmonella. Its antimicrobial activity is found inside the bacterial cell, with an optimum temperature of 15°C for a better activity.
