Abstract
This research is part of the preparation of the Explora scientific debate contest under the following hypothesis: Is it possible that the salmon industry has caused the red tide in southern Chile in 2016? Based on the scientific evidence, we studied the possible relationship between the activity of the salmon industry and the phenomenon of the red tide. The evidence obtained from the literature research indicates that the accumulation of nutrients, such as nitrogen and phosphorus in the seabed, the conditions of marine currents, and the limited control over the accumulation of the industrial waste of this industry were determining factors affecting the environmental in the southern zone of Chile. Therefore, the environmental alterations produced by the salmon industry constitute a solid base for future studies aimed at demonstrating that the magnitude of environmental changes could trigger or facilitate the generation of red tide.
