Abstract

Fresh water is threatened by its irrational use. Eutrophication, resulting from the increase in phosphates and nitrates, favors the proliferation of algae and a decrease in oxygen. An alternative for mitigation is the use of biofilters, such as the Diplodon chilensis mollusk, which feeds on particles, reducing dissolved organic matter and microorganisms. This study evaluated the activity of Diplodon chilensis, expressed as variation in cell concentration, for different densities and size of individuals, temperatures, pH, salinity, grain size of the substrate, luminosity, presence of pesticides, and type of suspended cells. The results indicate that the activity of the mollusk is not affected by these factors: type of suspended cells, luminosity and size of individuals, but it does vary with the type of substrate. Regarding the density of individuals, the concentration of microalgae decreases at a higher density. Biofiltering activity varies with temperature; thus, after 6 hours 2°C, it consumed 70% of the microalgae, and at 25°C an approximate 85%. Regarding pH, the best was at pH = 5.5, consuming 75%. The increased salinity and presence of pesticides demonstrate its sensitivity to these factors. Thus, Diplodon chilensis would have potential to be used in purifying systems.
