Abstract
San Antonio is a province linked to the sea, where all its communes have a coastline, but: What do people know about the sea? This question led the “Yecos del INCO” Scientific Academy to carry out an investigation in adolescents on Ocean Literacy (OA), which is defined as “the basic information that each citizen should know in order to make responsible decisions regarding the sea.” The AO is based on Seven Ocean Literacy Principles, whose knowledge in people can be studied using a standardized questionnaire. The data collection methodology was applied to 120 adolescents whose results indicate that they view the ocean as an inexhaustible source of resources, where their actions have no impact on it. Of all the principles, the one that obtained the most correct answers was “The Earth has a single ocean with many characteristics”, which is related to the contents seen in the only unit of the Basic General Education plan, cycle II in natural sciences of 5th grade (2018). This result leads to the conclusion that students have a low level of ocean literacy, despite living next to the coast and it is considered relevant to incorporate marine content into formal education.
